Product Limitations & Application Boundaries

We publish these limitations because specifying the wrong product for an application is more costly than specifying a higher-performing alternative at the outset. These are not hypothetical edge cases — they are real installation environments where our standard products require evaluation or substitution.

Extreme Cold: Vinyl Frame Flex

Vinyl's coefficient of thermal expansion (~0.000034 in/in/°F) is significantly higher than fiberglass or aluminum. In climates where exterior temperatures regularly fall below −20°F (Climate Zone 7–8), repeated freeze-thaw cycling can cause minor frame dimensional changes that affect air infiltration ratings over time. For projects in extreme northern Minnesota, Alaska, or high-altitude mountain environments, we recommend specifying our reinforced vinyl or requesting fiberglass alternatives from our distribution network.

Vinyl Siding: Not Paintable After Installation

Our vinyl siding uses color-through construction, which eliminates painting as a maintenance requirement but also eliminates painting as a future color-change option. Once installed, the siding cannot be field-painted to a different color — doing so voids the limited lifetime color warranty. For HOA environments where future color changes are likely, or for custom applications requiring a specific paint color, fiber cement is a more appropriate specification.

Hail Exposure: Siding Impact Limits

Standard vinyl siding profiles are tested to FM 4473 Class 4 impact resistance (2-inch steel ball at 90 mph), but direct hail strikes above approximately 1.75-inch diameter at high velocity can cause visible denting or cracking. In historically high-hail corridors (central Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado Front Range), we recommend evaluating thicker-gauge profiles or discussing fiber cement alternatives. Hail damage is not covered under warranty as it is classified as an impact event, not a manufacturing defect.

Installation Deviation Voids Coverage

All product warranties require strict adherence to Cornerstone Building Brands published installation instructions and applicable local building codes. Common installation errors that void coverage include: improper rough opening flashing, installation without required shims or leveling, caulking over weep holes, and application of incompatible sealants to vinyl frames. These are not uncommon on job sites — download our installation guides before beginning work.

Commercial Applications: Know the Rating Limits

Not all products in our catalog are rated for commercial applications. Our residential window lines are tested to AAMA 101 R (residential) performance levels. Light commercial specifications require products rated to AAMA 101 HC or CW — which are a subset of our catalog. Specifying a residential-rated product in a commercial application that requires HC or CW compliance is a code violation that will not be resolved by warranty coverage.

How Our Products Compare: Performance & Warranty Benchmarks

Independent material comparisons help specifiers make informed decisions. The table below compares key performance and warranty parameters across primary window and cladding material categories based on manufacturer-published specifications and NFRC/AAMA certified test data.

Warranty FAQ

The model number is on the label affixed to the window or door frame — typically on the sill or corner jamb for windows, and on the top rail or frame pocket for doors. If the label is missing or illegible, contact our warranty team at 1-800-555-0190 with your installation address and approximate purchase date.
We review all warranty claims within 5 business days of receipt. You will receive a confirmation email when your claim is submitted, and a follow-up email when our review is complete. Complex claims requiring on-site inspection may take additional time; you will be notified if this applies.
Yes, most Cornerstone Building Brands warranties transfer to subsequent purchasers. Vinyl window and door warranties transfer with modified terms — primarily covering structural defects but with reduced glass seal and hardware coverage. Vinyl siding warranties transfer at 50% coverage. Contact us to confirm transfer terms for your specific product line.
Yes. Warranty coverage requires installation per Cornerstone Building Brands published installation instructions and all applicable local building codes. Products that have been field-modified, improperly flashed, or installed in applications outside their rated performance parameters are not covered. Our installation guides are available free of charge in the resources section above.
Yes. Fogging between glass panes (insulated glass seal failure) is covered under our glass seal warranty — 20 years for vinyl window lines from the date of manufacture. Submit a claim with your model number and photographs documenting the fogging. We will arrange a replacement sash or glass unit depending on product configuration.
